The Top Ten Traits of a Successful Internet Marketer

by Affiliate Doctor on May 15, 2012

It has been my pleasure and good fortune to work with hundreds of incredibly successful Internet entrepreneurs. And over the years, I’ve come to notice that the people who manage to achieve incredible success on the Internet share some very obvious character traits.

We think these characteristics played a huge role in helping these otherwise “regular folk” succeed when so many others have not.

Please take a moment to review this list… and as you read it, ask yourself, “How many of these traits do I possess?” They could help you figure out whether your personality is well suited to this type of work and if you are able to devote the time and energy necessary to grow an idea into an online business that will generate a steady and profitable stream of income for years to come.

1. A winning attitude

Most successful Internet marketers have complete certainty they’ll be able to achieve their goals. They know that hard work and ambition will get them what they want in life — and they’re almost always right. They never let setbacks or failures discourage them. Instead, they learn from their mistakes and keep pressing on.

2. Live to work versus work to live

Successful online entrepreneurs are passionate about what they do.

They don’t want a job where they just put their time in and collect a paycheck. They are excited to get up each morning to check their web stats and see how many sales they’ve made in the night, and are happy to answer the comments people are leaving on their blog.

Even though they love the flexibility their Internet business lifestyle affords them, in their off-hours they still enjoy keeping up to date on what’s happening in their business and their industry because they’re truly interested and invested in it.

3. An eager learner

There’s a lot to learn in the world of Internet marketing. You have to become familiar with market research, web design principles, copywriting, search engine marketing, email marketing, and the whole social media scene if you want to make incredible money online.

On top of that, the Internet marketing world is barely more than a decade old, and is an ever-evolving landscape. New trends and technological developments are happening all the time.

In order to deal with all of this, you shouldn’t be afraid to dive into unfamiliar subjects and acquire new skills. The great thing about the Internet is, with all the amazing information out there, this is relatively easy for you to do. You just have to be willing to keep an open mind and be willing to learn new things.

4. Insatiable curiosity

Without exception, all of the most successful Internet marketers share an insatiable curiosity. They want to know everything there is to know about their industry and their customers. They want to know how things work, and how things can be made to work better. They’re always asking questions, because they know the answers will help them manage their business better.

5. Willing to try new things

On your journey to becoming a successful Internet marketer, you will probably find yourself doing things you never imagined themselves doing before — such as writing blog posts or articles, or recording audio and video messages to share with your audience. You may even find yourself hosting live webinars and interviewing industry experts.

If you don’t think you have the skills to do such important business-building tasks, guess again. There are many different tools you can use to easily handle all of these things. Many of them are free to get and simple to learn, so don’t let fear of cost or technology prevent you from embracing these different marketing methods.

But if you’re outright terrified even to consider doing such things simply because they’re something you’ve never done before, then you may find it more challenging than most people to grow your successful online business.

6. Organized

There are many different tasks you’ll have to accomplish each day as you grow your online business, and you’ll need strong organizational skills in order to achieve them as efficiently and effectively as possible. If you don’t have an organizational mindset or framework that can help you prioritize your tasks and stay on target then now’s the time to start developing one.

7. Strong networking skills

No man is an island — and no business on the Internet is, either.

If you want to reach more customers and come up with new products to offer to them then you have got to be able to get out there and make connections with other people in your industry, as well as other Internet marketers who are willing to share what they’ve learned with you so you can gain from their mistakes and overcome the hurdles most people face as they work to get their business of the ground.

Even if your networking takes place primarily online, you’ll have to feel comfortable going to forums and blogs and interacting with others. These are the best ways to make the essential connections you’ll need to ensure the success of your business.

8. Able to focus on the big picture

When you’re eyeballs deep in a hundred different tasks, it can be difficult to remember the goals you’re working toward.

You can’t let yourself get so distracted or discouraged that you forget why you’re doing all these things. You have to be able to develop a business plan that identifies exactly what you want to accomplish and outlines the steps you’re going to take to achieve those goals. And then you need to be able to stick to that plan no matter what.

9. Willing to take risks

Let’s face it: you won’t be able to predict the outcome of every single action you take as you build your business.

For example, maybe you find a niche idea that seems promising but there’s no way to know with 100% certainty if it will translate into a successful web business. Does that mean you don’t go for it?

No — you take the plunge, go through the steps of researching your competition, developing your product, building your website, and conducting your marketing efforts. You do your best and you see what happens. Even if that idea doesn’t turn into a major money maker, by going through the process you will have learned an incredible amount of knowledge that you will be able to apply to your next project — and your chances of success will be that much greater.

10. Willing to work your butt off — for the first few months, at least

Yes, you can make incredible money online working only a few hours a week.

… But first you have to get to that point — and that will take some time and effort on your part.

Depending on your level of computer and marketing experience, there’s a lot you’ll need to learn to do before your online efforts generate the profits you’re hoping for. But if you’re willing to roll up your sleeves and apply yourself to the tasks at hand then your hard work will be rewarded tenfold.

… So how did you do? How many of these character traits do you already possess?

If your answer is ten out of ten then you are already in a great position to establish a lucrative online business. If you feel like you might be weak in one or two areas then now’s the time to work on cultivating those aspects of your personality.

When you have the right attitude and are willing to throw yourself 100% into your business then you will be able to grow it that much faster and be able to reap the incredible rewards of your efforts that much sooner.

As a savvy entrepreneur, you should always be looking for ways to grow your subscriber list.

After all, your list is made up of people who have bought a product or signed up for your opt-in offer. They have already demonstrated an interest in what you offer. These are the people who are most likely to convert to loyal repeat customers, so you want to develop a strong relationship with as many of them as possible.

But how do you grow your subscriber list without draining your budget?

The good news is, there are many ways to use the Internet’s free tools and resources to spread the word about your business. Today we’re going to share one of our recent favorites: a simple strategy you can use to grow your list quickly using two of the Internet’s most popular social networks: Facebook and Twitter. And best of all, it’s free.

All you have to do is follow these four steps…

Step 1: Come Up with an Irresistible Free Giveaway

The key to any list growth strategy is to offer something of irresistible value to your customers. The offer has to be strong enough to convince them to hand over their contact information to you. And in the modern age of “V!agr@” spam and inbox overload, people are more cautious than ever about who they choose to let in the door.

Plus, you’re not only asking them to hand over their contact information, you’re asking them to persuade their friends to do the same thing. They’re not going to want to annoy their friends with a contest or offer that doesn’t sound incredibly valuable.

So you have to make them an offer they can’t refuse. They have to be convinced that the thing they’re signing up for is something that has the potential to make their lives — and their friends’ lives — better in some way.

Here are three examples of irresistible offers:

Example 1 – Run a Contest: Let’s say you’re a professional life coach. You could run a contest in which you give 12 months of free personal coaching to the winner.

“A full year?” you might be thinking… That might seem like far too valuable a prize to give away, but that’s the point. The offer has to be too good to pass up.

Remember, you can define what that year of coaching might look like — maybe it’s a free one-hour session every two weeks or once a month for the year. It doesn’t have to have a negative impact on your business. And what you’ll get in exchange for that hour of your time every two weeks is something that’s worth more than gold: a huge list of people who are clearly interested in the prospect of receiving some personal life coaching.

Plus, the contest offers you a valuable story you can share with your list over time: the story of how the winner’s life was made better through your coaching. You can send out a monthly update to your list telling them about the personal triumphs your client has experienced. (The client will have to agree to this so make sure you include it in the official contest terms.)

Your subscribers will be inspired by client’s story and many of them will be motivated to sign up for coaching sessions with you. It’s an incredibly powerful way to promote your business in an authentic, non-salesy, non-intrusive manner.

Example 2 – A Video Course: Maybe your site sells all things related to ukuleles. Strings, stands, song books, “make your own ukulele” manuals, you name it. You could offer a contest, like the personal life coach in the example above. Maybe you could give away a free vintage ukulele to the winner.

Or, instead of a contest, you could offer a free 7-part video course that teaches ukulele beginners how to play like an expert in seven days or less.

Yes, it will take some time and effort to create this video series. But you don’t have to worry about high production values… You could even make these videos by yourself with a basic digital camera, if you know how to shoot video with it. Then you could use a free video editing program such as Windows Movie Maker for the PC or iMovie for the Mac to add some professional touches to your video and you’re done. The whole process shouldn’t take you more than a week or two.

Once you’ve posted the video course to your site and make it available to subscribers only, you will quickly be able to grow a list of people who are obviously interested in learning how to play the ukulele — and that’s your exact target market. How’s that for music to your ears?

Example 3 – A Product Sample: Maybe you sell a cookbook for diabetics in the form of an eBook. You could offer a free “mini-version” of your product to anyone who signs up — maybe a complete set of recipes for an upcoming holiday meal, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or the Fourth of July.

Not only would that help grow your mailing list, it would help showcase the value of your cookbook.

Once you have decided what your valuable opt-in offer will be, it’s on to the next step…

Step 2: Create a Simple Landing Page Promoting Your Offer

Your landing page doesn’t need a fancy design or a whole bunch of copy — just a benefit-driven headline, some copy emphasizing how valuable this offer is, and an opt-in form for people to sign up to enter the contest or receive their gift.It should look something like this:

Win a Free Garden Makeover ($1000 value)

The Landscape Experts of Green Goddess Gardening
Want to Help You
Transform Your Overgrown, Weedy Backyard
Into a Tranquil Natural Paradise

We’ll Work with You to Help You
Realize Your Garden Dreams…

Sign Up Now for Your Chance to Win!

Contest Ends August 31st

* All fields must be filled in to qualify

* First name: _________________________

* Email Address: ______________________

* Link to site where I shared the news about this contest: _________________

Enter As Many Times As You Want
… May the “Best Garden Win!

If you have a blog, you could even set up one of your posts or pages to function as the landing page.

(Note: if you’re just in the process of building your site and are thinking of adding a blog to it, we recommend you choose WordPress. It’s a much better platform to use for landing pages as it allows you more freedom in formatting the size, font, and style of your text.)

The one really important thing you can’t forget to include on this page — other than some attention-getting copy that compels people to fill in the entry application — is a field on the opt-in form that requires your subscribers to prove they have shared news about your contest on some other website. This field should prompt them to paste the link of a website where they have promoted your contest or free giveaway. This website could be Facebook, or Twitter, or a blog — either their own or someone else’s.

If you’re running a contest, you could allow them to enter as many times as possible, as in the example above. Depending on the size of your list and how many submissions or entries you expect to get, you might want to set up the delivery of the gift in such a way that they don’t receive it until you have checked the link and confirmed it is legitimate.

Once your landing page is ready, it’s time to start telling people about it…

Step 3: Send out an email blast

If you already have a list of subscribers, send them an email letting them know about your free giveaway or contest. This email should generate excitement about your offer and encourage as many of your existing list to sign up for it. You want to get them so pumped about it that when they see the field that prompts them to share the news about the offer with their friends or family, they’ll be happy to do so because they’ll feel like they’re doing their loved ones a huge favor.

Then, as they post information about your contest to their Facebook profile, their Twitter stream, or their blog, they will end up sharing it with other people. And then those people who find your offer intriguing will be compelled to sign up as well — prompting them to share the information with their contacts in turn.

Step 4: Promote the contest on Facebook and Twitter

By now you should be aware of the value of marketing your business through these two incredibly popular social networks. If you haven’t already set up a Twitter account and a Facebook Page for your business, now’s the time to do it. It won’t take you long and will open up new sources of traffic for your business. Even if your website hasn’t been built yet, you can start building up a community of interested people today.

When you have built up a decent following on Facebook and Twitter, start using these channels to promote your incredible offer. Post daily updates about it for one or two weeks, and then let your friends and followers do the rest.

… And that’s all you have to do!

Once word of your offer gets out, people who are interested in it will do most of the promoting for you. You remember the commercials from the 80s, where the beautiful model told two friends about her great hair products, and then they told two friends, and they told two friends, and so on, and so on…? The same principle applies here.

Before you know it, you will have new subscribers from all over the social sphere, signing up for your offer — a fresh new audience to grow a connection with and educate about the value of your products.

You don’t even need a site yet

The great thing is, you can implement this strategy and start seeing great results even if you don’t have your official site up yet. As long as you have accounts on Facebook and Twitter and a decent number of fans and followers, you can use a simple landing page to grow your list of interested subscribers and start building a strong relationship with them.

Just be aware that your list is your most precious resource. If you want them to remain responsive to your message, you always have to act with their best interests in mind. Be sure to overdeliver on the quality resources and information so that when you do present them with a sales message, they don’t resent you for it and value your opinion enough to check out your offer. A ratio to follow is eight emails of useful free information for every purely promotional message you send.

That way, you’ll ensure that your new subscribers remain eager to open your messages. And the more people you’ve got reading your emails, the more sales you’ll make.
